The Love of God Explored

May 11, 2011| van der Hoeven

We all know God loves us, we are told this from the time we are very young, at least I know I was, and I am so glad that I know this, yet how many of us not only have a head knowledge of the love of God, but really understand and bank off of this fantastic and most glorious truth? God loves you. What does this mean? Well to start, we have to know what it means for God to love, what God’s definition of love is. Take a look at Romans 5:6-11, read it through again.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. That’s the love of God, he didn’t die because he had something to get from us, but because He loved us and wanted to be made much of. We were worthless worms, fighting against God, headed straight for Hell and deserving it. Right then, right in the middle of our sinful worthless state, Christ came down and paid for those sins. Why? What would that accomplish? Worthless sinners have nothing to offer back in return for such love. Correct!

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:6-11

Christ rescued us from sin, from slavery with His own blood that we might be able to fall in love with Him. He died that we might, with unveiled eyes, see the beauty of the Lord and rejoice for the rest of life and eternity in His glory. God is crazy to love people like me, so fickle, so cloudy and prone to wander away from Him. Anyone else would leave, but not God. He didn’t fall in love with me because I was lovable, but because I was un-lovable, and his love was strong enough to overcome that and change my mind, my life, my all, that I might fall in love with what I once abhorred.

Now that I am in love with God and He with me, how much more must His love be toward me. For if Christ could die in love for a people who were his enemies, how much more now that we are his Bride. Rejoice then my brothers and sisters in the Lord! For your Creator is in love with you!
