When I was a child I didn’t have my father around a lot but, when he did come around to visit, it was fun. After all, every boy loves to play or just spend that special moment with his dad, no matter how short the period. My father’s favorite thing to do was to visit the movie theater and each time he wanted to go, he would ask if my brother and I wanted to come along. The strangest thing about this however, is that he always walked to the theater even though it was about 6 miles away from where we lived with our aunt. What I learned on those long walks between the ages of about 7-9 years, is that I really needed to grow up and reach my teenage years faster because, my dad was a fast walker and every two steps I took he would only have to take one. My dad was not a Christian, so, we didn’t learn much about God from him but, what I did learn, was a love for nature, my culture and for people.
I learned about God, my heavenly Father, when I went to church on Sundays and I learned of His love through one of the choruses that was sung almost every Sunday. The chorus goes – "I love that man from Galilee, cause he has done so very much for me, he has taken all my sins an let the Holy Ghost come in, I love that man, that man from Galilee". I had no clue who this Man was but, I knew he love us all because, the church was full of joy when this and other choruses were sung. I later learned that the Man mentioned in that simple chorus was Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah.
At about age 8 we moved from our Aunt’s house to another guardian’s house because our mom had to flee the country of our birth, without us. I will not get into the details or reasons for that, but that, it was my father’s fault. The relocation from our aunt’s house meant less visits from our father. I found myself talking to God more, and calling him my heavenly Father. The reason why I am a Christian today is because of all the provision God has made through the rough times and also because, He was revealed to me at such a young age. There were more than one close death accidents, for which I did not have to be hospitalized. I did not surrender to Jesus until I was 16 years of age but, that’s all because of disobedience along the way. God has been merciful, through Jesus Christ and that’s why I call Him, Father. – Michael Taylor
Romans 8:15(King James Version)
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
